KURBAAN- ‘Don’t Kurbaan your precious time on this saifeena joke!’
- Savio Zacharia
Rensil D’silva well known for his writing skills with scripts such as AKS and RANG DE BASANTI ,makes his debut as a director. Karan Johar produces the necessary backup and thus the movie speaks of a power packed star cast… with Saif and Kareena already wooing the audiences with their off screen relationships turning steamy on screen.
Well, then this one should be a hit right?
Maybe not! As the audiences have evolved and don’t want to spend 100 bucks just to watch an off-screen couple dance around on screen.
The movie is based on the same old saga of ‘terrorism’ , ‘muslims’ , ‘stereotypes’ , ‘bombings’, ‘9/11’ etc…. absolutely overdone in bollywood.
The movie takes off with Ehsaan (Saif Ali khan) crossing paths with Avantika (Kareena Kapoor) in an attempt to catch and taxi and later on we see the two are apparently professors at the same college getting to know each other. Further on, getting married …… moving off to the US….. bla bla …Kareena Discovering her husband is a terrorist etc. And Riyaaz (Vivek Oberoi) a journalist out to take the whole world on his own without any cop support..hehe.
One of the major flaws lies in the script and indeed the screenplay by Rensil. He fails at bringing forth the seriousness of the issue of terrorism and the movie begins to slide downwards as a complete mockery of the same.
Various sequences in the movie seem highly irrelevant and the dialogues by Anurag Kashyap are just so lame.
Firstly, it such a joke to see two professors in a college go out on a date too soon and make out with each other in the so called staff room. Moreover, Saif’s hairdo changes drastically before and during the date….lack of conitunity. But that’s not the main problem….
Furthermore you wonder why Kareena would step into the attic to witness the terrorists in the first place…such a voyeuristic neighbor she indeed is.
To add on, one of the most lame sequences is when Vivek Oberoi now playing the same role that Neil Nitin played in New York …tries to be a spy amongst the terrorist. He asks Kareena to get a hold of the map (on which the possible station names have been marked out) which is in Saif’s study and what’s the best way for her to get to it…..yup, the same old Bollywood gimmick of seduction … more like another ‘Aaj ki raat, hona hai kya..’…maybe that s the relevance of the title-KURBAAN.
Flaws and loop holes in the script galore ….. a sequence in the film has vivek burst out saying “NO COPS! I’LL HANDLE THEM MYSELF”….haha.. to which the audience burst out ….if he were Rambo then maybe, we could digest it ..especially when the terrorists are planning yet another 9/11.
Above all, the movie hardly puts across Jihad or Islam in an understanding manner and further reinforces the stereotype of Muslims in bollywood.
Only 15 min of the climax is gripping but that too is spoiled by stupid ‘filmy’ sequences of Saif relishing with bullets all over him , yet having the time to engage in some stupid conversation with Kareena who now wants to know his real name…… absolutely lame.
The performances were just as vague as the script and OM puri and Kirron Kher are super annoying…in fact Vivek did get bit here and there yet far from impressive.
Let’s see how the audience treats this one…. They may just opt to ‘kurbaan’ this one and stay at home.
